Doors Installation How-To Advice Help
Update Your Home with Dramatic New Doors and Windows
Let me tell you a little secret: I have issues with settling into a home. After a few years the neighborhood, the house, everything starts to get old, and I want something new. Moving every few years as a child probably conditioned that desire as an adult. With the move came new places to explore, new schools, and new people to meet.
My husband wasn't too fond of the idea of relocating every few years. His family stayed in the same house with the same furniture his whole childhood. Not that he wants us to live that way, but my desire to relocate is greatly tempered by his desire to stay in one place. Last year when I wanted to move, he tried to persuade me to stay put. Not only was there a downturn in the housing market, but it appeared that it was foreshadowing a more general economic slowdown. Trying to sell the house and take on a new mortgage wouldn't have been the best course of action.
He turned out to be correct, so I focused on other matters. Instead of moving to a new house, we can upgrade the one we've got! We'd started entertaining more frequently and really needed some extra space. Once we had turned over a few options in our heads, we settled on a veranda along the back of the house. With a "library" of home improvement books at my disposal, I was able to find the perfect design for French double doors to replace the sliding door and screen door that our dog had run through when he was a puppy.
The contractor I hired to do the veranda helped me find a really great company I could use to have new dramatic French doors installed along with complementary windows. Because the master bedroom was located at the rear of the house as well, we made the decision to have those windows replaced with French doors also, creating a serene retreat. An artificial waterfall was the crown jewel of our peaceful new space.
Nearly a year has passed since we remodeled. I've been delighted ever since. It's such a pleasure to entertain having the French doors open to allow the flow of guests and breezes alike. This is everything I had hoped for. We may not ever need to move again after all. My husband is happier than I've ever seen him. He says that he was thinking that maybe over the long term, getting a new wife would have been easier than moving every couple of years. I’m sure he was just joking – Right?
